Hand injuries are one of the most common injuries to get. We use our hands every day, and something as simple as not positioning them correctly during tasks could cause some problems in the long run. Our hands have many bones, joints, and ligaments more susceptible to injury, such as a finger fracture. Since these injuries are so common, it’s valuable to know basic first aid to help them. Here are some common hand injuries and how you can apply first aid to them while you wait for professional help.
1. Hand Infections
A hand infection is a common injury, especially among people who work with animals. Small bites, like from a cat, are most likely to get infected since you won’t be able to clean out the bacteria that have already gotten into your skin. A larger wound is easier to wash out, a better chance of getting rid of the bacteria. Regardless of the size, wash the wound with soap and water. If it’s bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth to slow it down. You can put on antibiotic cream as a temporary measure until a professional can look at the wound and prescribe the proper medicine.
2. Finger Fractures
Thankfully, a finger fracture is less painful than a broken finger. Chances are, the injured person would still be able to move their finger a little, but this shouldn’t be encouraged. Instead, create a splint for the finger by using a popsicle stick or pen and aligning it under the finger. Wrap the object and finger together with a thin cloth or anything available. If the finger is swollen or bruising, apply ice as you bring the injured person to professional help.
3. Wrist Fractures
A wrist fracture can be more severe than a finger fracture. These fractures are also known as distal radius fractures. Call emergency help if the wound is bleeding heavily or the joint looks deformed. While waiting for help to arrive, you can do similar first aid methods as a finger fracture. Apply ice packs to help with swelling and pain, and create a splint using cardboard or rolled-up newspaper. If the person is in shock, lay them down and elevate their legs.
These first aid tips are valuable but are only temporary solutions until you get the injured person to professional help. For professional treatment of these injuries and other injuries, such as tennis elbow treatment in Singapore, visit the Advanced Hand, Wrist & Nerve Centre.
